“Cold Ground, Warm Air” is a collaborative project with Wonseok Lim, reinterpreting his graduate collection “Bipolar,” which encapsulates a mix of masculinity and femininity through moderate designs with detailed structural characteristics.
While “Bipolar” is defined as having or relating to two poles or extremities, the soft skin and delicate details of the garments, revealed between the cut black fabric and the cold metal frames, drew my focus to the coexistence of coldness and warmth in his designs.
The result, “Cold Ground, Warm Air,” captures that paradoxical coexistence through a carefully crafted 3D scene, calmly depicting a mysterious warmth—neither entirely cold nor purely warm.

Scene overwiew
The scene depicts a white horse, finally set free from the cold armor pieces, lying on the ground of a tranquil winter forest. Snow on the ground, ice, and falling snowflakes might seem like cold elements, but the details of the materials, subtle movements, and the color scheme create a calm and warm atmosphere.
The scene’s composition was designed to ensure smooth visual flow. The camera, with a deep depth of field, moves out slowly using a dolly. The intention behind these decisions was to establish visual sophistication by avoiding large movements or changes, instead highlighting subtle details and movements.

The Horse
Since the horse is the central object of the scene, it was modeled, sculpted, textured, and rigged from scratch. Once its pose and position were set, more details and hairs were added to the face, neck, and forelegs to enhance realism.

The Armor Pieces
The armor pieces represent elements that restrained the horse from revealing what lay inside. Their design and texture were inspired by the metal structures in the original collection and medieval horse armor. Brushed and scorched textures were procedurally created.

Prodedural materials- Ice, Snow, Water
Realistic, natural looking materials were crucial, as the slow-moving camera allows the audience to closely observe the scene. The most challenging aspect was creating a snow material that convincingly showed the snow melting to reveal the soil underneath.
The snow material was procedurally made by adjusting transparency based on the central axis of the object, along with other settings. Additionally, the water in the foreground was carefully animated with attention to detail for natural looking movement of water with small waves by floating ice.

Color Grading - EXR & Davinci Resolve
The final render was completed in EXR format and color graded in DaVinci Resolve. The goal was to achieve a soft, natural tone with subtle visual accents, such as slightly saturated leaves floating on the river. Snow on the trees and falling snowflakes were rendered separately and composited later.
