‘Supernatural’ is a short film that portrays a girl with psychokinetic powers, demonstrating her abilities through a delicate visual narrative and sound design. This project is my first technical attempt to overcome the somewhat lifeless nature of 3D media by blending virtual and real-world elements.

 

The film was produced by integrating real-life footage with virtual 3D environments and objects, through a collaborative effort involving CSM students from various courses. Supernatural(02) creates an ethereal atmosphere throughout the film, employing various structural elements and subtle visual and sound effects.

The set design underwent multiple refinements to achieve the environment's dark yet delicate atmosphere. I kept a dominant colour as black throughout the space, and diversified shades and textures of black surfaces to add subtle density to the visuals.

As the curtains parted, bright light hit the white platform and the surfaces of the green-tinted glass box, transforming the dark space into a new environment. From this point, camera movement and settings played a huge role. I actively utilised various depth-of-field and focus settings to create a sense of space and otherworldliness, and to guide the audience's focus in each scene.

 

The sequence was planned to draw the audience toward the focal point of the visual narrative. Smooth and steady camera movements were essential to allow viewers to have enough time to observe and absorb the intended visual flow.

Final set design

I used Asmus Tietchens & Richard Chartier’s ‘Fabrication’ as background music, and retouched it by adding additional audio layers from the original track and sonar sfx to give more atmospheric depth to the overall sound.
